Canon Basil Davies BA was the vicar of St Barnabas Church, Bexhill-on-Sea from 1926 until 1940. However he was better known to every motorcycle enthusiast for more than half a century as Ixion, the renown and respected columnist of the Blue-Un (The Motor Cycle). A prolific writer Canon Davies also wrote motorcycling copy under other pseudonyms including Road Rider and Veteran, in motoring titles as Runabout or under his own name BH Davies without his title, as an expert on bridge under Bridgeworld, Goulash and Ximenes, used Christopher Sly for his cricketing titles and employed various other pseudonyms too.
Nine years ago Dave Masters organised the first Ixion Run, starting from ‘his’ church St Barnabas in honour of the man. More recently fellow SMCC member Ian Cockshull took over the reigns of this super event which caters for all classes of SMCC Ltd motorcycles, outfits and tricycles manufactured before 1940. With a coffee stop en route, an excellent cafe across the road from the church and adequate nearby on street parking for tender vehicles the Ixion Run has become a ‘must do’ event for many enthusiasts.
